Mother’s Day is coming soon which means looking for a nice Mother’s Day craft for kids and teens to make. Mom’s do so much for us, no matter our age, so now is the time to start planning the perfect gift to make them.
I don’t know about you, but I love getting homemade gifts from my kids. It means so much to me. I can’t help smiling every time I see it. When kids make crafts, they tend to put their all into it and are beaming with pride as you open it. That memory stays for years to come.
So, no matter how old your kids are, here is a simple Mother’s Day craft kids AND teens can make. It takes only a few simple materials but is easy to adapt for any age. I’ve done this with toddlers and tweens. Adults could even make this and give them as presents, too.
What is this Mother’s Day craft?
Decorative candles.
Let’s get started. I’ll show you how to make this simple craft into a beautiful gift for mom.
Mother’s Day Craft for Kids and Teens
As I said, this is a simple craft. All you need is a few materials.
Materials:
- White candle (you pick the size)
- White tissue paper
- Markers
- Scrap paper
- Hairdryer
Depending on the age of the kids, you can choose the appropriate-sized candle. Younger kids may only use a votive-sized candle, while teens may want a pillar candle. That’s what makes this Mother’s Day craft so perfect for any age.
If you want to make your own candles, check out this How to Make Pillar Candle tutorial. You will have a truly homemade gift.
How to Make:
First Step: Cut your tissue paper as wide as you would like it for your candle. Make sure when it wraps around your candle, you leave the tissue paper long. You will need to easily grip the tissue paper, so you can hold it tightly around the candle (more on that later).
Second Step: Next, lightly mark with a pencil the area the kids will draw in. Remember, we left the tissue paper long. You don’t want the kiddos drawing in the area that will not be on the candle. They won’t be happy their work is being cut off.
Third Step: Now it is time to decorate the tissue paper with the markers. Since the tissue paper is thin, make sure to place a sheet of paper (cardboard, etc.) underneath it. This way, the markers bleed on the paper, NOT the table.
Kids can create any design they want. It can say Happy Mother’s Day, pretty designs, or drawings of mom’s favorite things. Whatever, they can dream up.
Fourth Step: Once the drawings are complete, get out the hairdryer. With younger kids, an adult will want to do this step. The hairdryer can get VERY hot on the hands.
Fifth Step: Now, wrap the tissue paper around the candle. Line it up so all of the drawing in on the candle. Hold the extra ends tightly in place.
Sixth Step: Using the hairdryer, hold it near the candle and over the tissue paper. You will begin melting the drawing onto the candle. Work your way around the candle, being careful not to burn your hand. It can get hot.
Once the candle heats up and the picture begins to melt onto the candle, trim the extra tissue paper you were holding on to. Now you can melt it into the candle. Make sure to cut the extra paper so it does not overlap. It may make it harder to melt onto the candle.
Seventh Step: Once the image is melted onto the candle, you are all done. Wrap it up in some pretty paper. Voila, you have a simple Mother’s Day craft kids and teens made in a short time.

I thought this was a great idea!! You were not kidding on warning “The Blow Dryer Gets HOT!!” I ended up putting gloves on to hold the tissue paper to protect my hands. But i do see in the tutorial you have that directed air flow attachment to your blow dryer, but i did not have one!
The kids are making this for Mother’s Day in Sunday School! Thank you for a great idea!
You’re welcome! I hope you and the kids have a lot of fun.
The kids LOVED it!! I wasn’t sure how it would go over, since my kids are 13 – 14 years old, but they thought it was so “cool” how the tissue paper “melted” into the candle, making their gift unique! Thank you again!
You’re welcome! I am so happy to hear this worked out so well for you. They are such simple but pretty gifts. Thanks for sharing. I’m glad I could help. ☺️
