Writing can be challenging for kids, well, I guess even adults. Sometimes the physical act of writing is challenging for those with fine motor problems {plus, not everyone is great with typing either). Other times, kiddos struggle with WHAT to write about. They see the blank page and panic. So, I decided to help those kiddos with some fun picture prompts that can work with teens and tweens.
Let’s face it; some kiddos are visual learners. So they need to SEE something to help them learn. Well, it can be true for writing. Sure, you can give some kids a writing prompt or story starter, and off they go.

However, visual learners may do better if you give them an image to help their brains form a picture in their minds first. Then, pictures help get the ball rolling so writing can begin.
So, below you can download some picture prompts for teens and tweens.
Using Picture Writing Prompts with Teens and Tweens
Picture prompts can be useful to use with teens and tweens. You can use them in your homeschool, co-op, or school setting. There are many ways you can use them.
- You can use them in writing centers.
- Assign picture prompts for short writing assignments when you are not ready to start something new (like before a vacation or a new unit study).
- Prompts are perfect for days when mom or teacher is sick. Kids can pick one and write up a short piece.
- Use these prompts to motivate a student that is struggling with creative writing.
- Writing prompts are perfect for adding a little fun to writing.
- You can also use picture prompts to help kiddos practice writing on-demand writing pieces.
As a homeschool mom or teacher, you can print and cut each picture out. Then, place them in a writing center, put them in a writing folder, or store them in a “mom’s sick” or “substitute teacher” folder. Then, your prompts are ready to go.
You can allow kids to pick out their own prompt or assign a particular one. It’s up to you how you want to use them.
