When I was a classroom teacher, many of the teachers used writing prompts with kids throughout the year. We did this because our school district always had a spring writing prompt. Kids were assigned a topic and had to write on it. Then, grade level teachers got together one teacher workshop day, swapped writing prompts, and graded them. If kids didn’t know how to write to a prompt, they would have some serious problems. Of course, there’d always be those poor kiddos that wrote one or two sentences and called it good.

Well, to help kids write on the spot, teachers often use writing prompts. It is seen as an even playing field. After all, EVERYONE is writing on the same topic and graded the same way. So kids actually need to be taught how to write to a prompt.

However, you don’t need to use writing prompts just to assess a child’s writing. They can be a fun writing activity, too. Not to mention, they are perfect for those poor kiddos that struggle to find something to write about.

Writing Prompts for Kids

Well, over the past couple of years or so, I’ve created writing prompts for each season. Just print them off and use them when you need a quick activity. Prompts are great for those days when you have a substitute teacher (if you’re a classroom teacher) or you need the kids to work independently (if you’re a homeschool mom). Plus, you CAN use them as a quick assessment tool. Kids can browse through the list for ideas, or you can assign them.

Here are links to 20 writing prompts for each season.

Oh, the spring writing prompts also have some pretty printable paper you can use. Check it out.

So, no matter how you plan on using these prompts, make sure to bookmark them, pin them, or print out your copies. These writing prompts are sure to come in handy sometime during the year.
