Math seems to be a struggle for many kids and parents alike. I know we have used several programs, games, and apps to make it a little more fun. Lately, we have been trying out Math Galaxy apps and eBooks to practice math in our homeschool. We’ve been using the Pre-Algebra Fundamentals and Grade 5 apps, along with the Decimals, Proportions, Percents ebook and Fraction ebook. Here are our thoughts.

Math Galaxy Apps

So what does Math Galaxy have for apps?

Well, Math Galaxy has a number of apps. They have grade-specific apps and apps to help with certain areas like multiplication facts, fractions, and word problems. Older kids, like my daughter, can practice Pre-Algebra, Algebra, and SAT prep. It is a K-12 math tutorial program with a lot to choose from.

The apps are available for Apple devices. I downloaded ours on my iPad, and they worked well. At the time of this review, the apps could be purchased for $4.99 each.

Using Math Galaxy apps

When I first read the description of Math Galaxy, it mentioned it had similar qualities as Singapore Math. This piqued my interest because my family had used Singapore Math for many years. Right away, I noticed what they meant. The apps use picture illustrations to help teach concepts from concrete to abstract just like Singapore math. If you have a child that needs visuals to help understand math, your child will like this program.

Reviews and Overviews

Math Galaxy also has in-depth explanations and videos. Each section has a review or overview option, which gives step-by-step instructions on how to do the problems.

If your kids do better with videos, they can click on the video section and get a quick tutorial on how to solve the problems.

Practice

Kids get plenty of practice within the app. I noticed with the 5th-grade app that, whether my son got the problem correct or wrong, it walked my son through the solution afterward. I liked that it did this.

However, I found this wasn’t the case with the Pre-Algebra app my daughter was doing. If she got an answer correct, it moved on. When the problem was wrong, she could try again, but it didn’t explain the solution.

Games

While the kids answer problems, they earn Power Packs. Later they use these to play the Labyrinth game. It is a maze type game. My kids find the game frustrating, but I don’t think they have quite figured it out yet, though. It may be more fun once they get the hang of it.

My son’s 5th-grade app has other games to play that didn’t require earning things to play them. My son enjoyed the Bridge the Swamp game. It is a two-player game either with another person or the computer.

How We Used the Apps

I used the Math Galaxy apps for math review. My kids would pick areas they wanted more practice and get on the app. At times, I assigned my son extra practice in areas he needed more work. For him, he spent a lot of time practicing fractions.

So, what did my kids think??

My son is a computer kid. He would spend all day doing work on the computer. For him, he liked the app and will continue to use it. Computer programs are VERY motivating to him.

When it comes to my daughter, she is mixed. She didn’t mind the app and felt it was helpful for review, but she isn’t big into computers. She can take it or leave it with apps and computer programs.

Overall, the Math Galaxy apps are good for math review. I wouldn’t rely on the explanations and videos to teach a concept to my kids the first time. It is, after all, meant as a tutorial program. It does just that.

Math Galaxy eBooks

Besides the apps, Math Galaxy also offers eBooks. I was given four books:

  • Whole Numbers
  • Fractions
  • Decimals, Proportions, Percents
  • Algebra

As stated, these are digital copies. They are easy to download. You print off the pages you want as you go. The eBooks are math review workbooks. Each book provides regular practice worksheets and riddle practice pages.

The bundles contain A LOT of practice. For example, the Fractions eBook has many topics. When you open a file, there may be 43 pages up to 163 pages in each section. This includes practice sheets and the answer key.

My son spent some time reviewing reducing fractions. The reducing fractions file contained 43 pages.

Math ebooks
One is a riddles worksheet and the other is a standard practice page.

My son liked the riddle pages. He even requested more fraction pages because he enjoyed them so much. I can say that was a first!

Do you need the eBooks?

No, you don’t need the extra books for the program. They are a helpful resource, though. They provide more practice, especially for kids that need more paper and pencil type work. Some math programs don’t have enough practice pages, and this can be helpful if that is the case.

Final Thoughts

Math Galaxy apps and eBooks are good for giving kids the practice they need. You can choose a specific grade level or give an extra boost for a specific skill. There are several apps to choose from.

Great review! My kids loved the Times Tables Balloon Pop app, but my 12 year old daughter didn’t care much for the 6th grade math app. The riddles are fun, though!

      Hi Megan,

Thank you for your kind words. My son liked the riddles a lot, too. He’s a jokester. It is an interesting program that isn’t for everyone. I wonder if kids that are super into computers are the ones who enjoy it more.
