Do you have kids that love playing on the computer? I certainly do. My son would spend all day on it if I allowed him. To his dismay, I don’t. However, I am always on the lookout for courses that will teach him how to code. We have been trying out Python for Beginners: Learn Coding at Home class by Homeschool Code Academy. It is an online coding class for kids. My son is really enjoying this class.
Online Coding Class for Kids
So, you probably want to know what Homeschool Code Academy is all about. Homeschool Code Academy offers 10 months’ access to their online coding lessons. That is a total of 158 lessons! The lessons teach children how to use Python to create 2-D graphics and games.
When you sign up, you can pay monthly or for all 10 months upfront. It is up to you.
To use this online coding class, you will need a Mac or Windows 10 computer. You will download a free program called Thonny to run the Python codes. It is quite simple to get started and use.
When kids are ready to begin, they will click into Python for Beginners on the dashboard. Next, kids watch videos in which the instructor walks them through different coding lessons with easy to follow instructions. Kids practice coding with challenges along the way.
If at any time kids need assistance, they can email their questions, and someone will get back to them.
What Kids Learn with Python for Beginners
As mentioned above, there are 158 lessons. The course starts very basic, like explaining what are computers and hardware and software, to later on creating a game. Here are the topics covered in the program.
While using this online coding class, kids will learn to input commands so the program will type their name, speak to them, create their own word game, and more.
As I previously mentioned, the video lessons are clear and simple to follow. Kids will watch the instructor and then try it for themselves. One really nice feature is the ability to speed up or slow down the video. My son slowed it down a little in the beginning.
Using Homeschool Code Academy in Our Homeschool
For this review, my 11-year-old son used the program several times a week. Honestly, it was something he was excited to do during the day because he really enjoyed it. He’d watch a video lesson and do the activity. During this review period, he completed 25% of the program.
My son was able to work independently on the coding lessons. He’d create a split-screen on the laptop. Half the screen would have the video lesson open, and the other half was where he’d input his code in Thonny. Occasionally, he might bring up the lesson on his Chromebook and do his work on the Windows computer.
Throughout the review period, my son would call me over to see the new project he completed. It was cool to see the computer saying his name or looking at the Mad Lib word game he created. I also loved seeing his excitement!

When I asked my son what he thought of the program, he said it was “so easy to use.” He liked the videos and how simple Python was for coding. The assignments were fun for him, too.
