Over the past several weeks, my kids and I have been exploring our SchoolhouseTeachers.com membership. If you aren’t familiar with SchoolhouseTeachers.com, it is a complete online curriculum for grades PreK through high school.
Usually, I am quite skeptical about “complete” curriculum programs. I am very particular about our program choices. Though, I must say SchoolhouseTeachers.com truly is the Ultimate PreK-12 Annual Membership. I am very impressed.
Overview of SchoolhouseTeachers.com
Homeschool Curriculum
SchoolhouseTeachers.com is a complete online curriculum for grades PreK-12. This curriculum covers every subject, and then some. It has all the content states require of homeschoolers. It has all core subjects, fine arts, health, physical education, and plenty of electives.
The lessons provide the material in many different ways. Some of the classes have material you download or print, and you teach your children. I found some classes have online videos for your child to watch, and then they complete assignments on their own. There is quite a variety in the format of the classes.
Resources
The SchoolhouseTeachers.com site provides far more than online classes and online electives, it also provides a lot of homeschool parent support with resources to help homeschool families. The Focus Learning Center has resources to help parents teach their children. You can find help with different subjects, special needs, and high school.
I went to the math section and found helpful material for teaching algebra and some math games to practice basic facts. Many of us, kids and adults, need help with math. I liked the printable multiplication games. They are a great way to practice multiplication facts.
The Literacy Center is another great tool for families. There you can find suggestions on where to get started in teaching your child to read. They provide books you can download along with comprehension work for more fluent readers.
Parents can also find resources to help with planning. I love the Bookmarks feature. It makes it so easy for parents to create folders and save classes for individual kids. My kids go in their folder and bring up their lessons and get to work.
Another resource SchoolhouseTeachers.com provides is the Scope and Sequence section. You can use this to help plan your child’s education program. It is especially useful if you’re unsure what to teach your child. All you do is click on your child’s grade level, and it will bring up common grade-level standards and suggestions for courses to use with your kid.
I was amazed at all the resources to help families. Besides all the resources I mentioned above, you kind find homeschool planners, record-keeping help, a schedule builder, a Parent ebook library, and more. They provide all the resources you need to help you on your homeschool journey.
How We Are Using SchoolhouseTeachers.com
Over the past several weeks, my kids have started many different kinds of online classes. My daughter wanted to take some of the online electives. My son wanted to take some online electives, but he also added in some core subjects, too.
For each of my children, I clicked on their grade level. For my son, I took a look at the elementary homeschool classes while my daughter need the middle school homeschool classes.
When the courses for their grade levels opened up, I was given different subjects to choose from. I opened up the different subject areas to see what they offered for classes. After reading several class descriptions and looking at the course outline, I bookmarked classes for each of my kids.
SchoolhouseTeachers.com With My Daughter
My daughter is in seventh grade. For her, I bookmarked a beginner guitar class, filmmaking, and typing class for. Her guitar and film making classes are online video lessons. The typing class is a mix of video, reading, and audio.
My daughter fell in love with her classes. She had bought a guitar months ago but hadn’t learned how to play it yet. Now she is finally learning to play guitar. She cannot get enough of her filmmaking class either. She is using all the information she is learning to write her own screenplay and plans on making her movie this summer.
Using the Program with My Son
My son was more ambitious and had me select several for him. I bookmarked a writing and typing program. He also decided to take a Spanish class, geography, and architecture class.
Most of my son’s classes involve me to do the teaching. He is a fifth-grader. They have wonderfully detailed lesson plans, a day-by-day schedule, and materials to download or print out. It makes teaching and planning so much easier.
Adventures in Writing-Welcome to Mooville is the writing program I assigned my son. I printed out the lesson plans, student worksheets, and suggested teaching schedules. Each day, I grab my materials and am ready to teach writing. I love it.
The Spanish class is a mix of video lessons, handouts, and a worksheet for homework. The lessons are short, well organized, and the homework reinforces what was taught in the video.
I assigned both my kids a typing class. Typing Coach was the name of the program. In Typing Coach, students have videos on things like correct posture. Also, the program has information for students to read and audio. For the audio, music plays and times them while they type. I don’t doubt my kids will learn to type correctly once this course is complete.
The kids are enjoying all the classes, and I am enjoying all the easy to access course work.
