With the world so uncertain now, I just want to have SOME normalcy. People are canceling festivals, concerts, and other fun summer events. Camping is one summer activity that doesn’t need to stop. You can have your own campout at home.
Campout at home?! YES!
When I say campout at home, I don’t mean just sleeping in a tent and cooking s’ mores, but a whole weekend of fun. REALLY! I hadn’t thought about it until the Scouts hosted a National Camp-In. Families from all over could participate in fun online activities, a 5k hike, and camp in their backyard or living room.
Sounds fun doesn’t it?!
Well, make it happen. I’m here to help.
Campout at Home
I decided to come up with a great weekend campout for families to do at home. After all, many families can’t get out camping right now. So many people are quarantined in their homes or don’t have the equipment or money to go camping this summer. Let’s make the best of the summer, and do some at-home camping!
Tips for Camping Inside or In Your Backyard
I came up with a camping guide you can use for inside camping or camping in your backyard. I know sometimes people don’t have a backyard to camp in or the weather doesn’t want to cooperate, so I give options for both. This camping guide can be used at any time of year.
Schedule
I provide a complete schedule of ideas for your family to use. It takes the guesswork out of what to do. There are suggestions, a springboard of sorts, to give you some ideas. You can tailor it to meet your family’s needs.
Inside Camping Tips
If you are camping inside, here are some tips.
- Set up a tent or make a blanket tent inside your living room or garage.
- Simulate a campfire. You can make a fake campfire with cardboard tubes and yellow and red tissue paper. You could also bring in sticks from outdoors to make one, too.
- Cook on a grill or your regular stove. It will still be fun to eat meals you might have on a campout. You might also try using cast iron pans or a dutch oven like you might use on a camping trip.
- Your indoor activities for the weekend can have a camping/outdoor theme.
Backyard Camping
If you are lucky to have a backyard, camp as you would on a regular campout. Cook over a fire, or grill if you can’t have fires, sleep in a tent, and do outdoor activities. We even made our kids heat water over a fire and wash the dishes outside.
How to Use the Campout Guide
The camping packet contains:
- a schedule for the weekend
- ideas for meals
- an indoor and outdoor scavenger hunt
- blank forms to create your own weekend campout
The camping guide has links to help you along the way. You’ll find links for some of the suggested activities and menu ideas to make things easier for you.
I hope you find this campout guide helpful. With the way the world is right now, try and have as much fun you can this summer as a family. Camping is a fun summer activity you CAN do at home. So download the Campout Guide and get camping with your family this weekend.

What an awesome idea! It’s been awhile, but I have great memories of camping when my daughter was in girl scouts, and this seems just like it! Thank you for the download – I will put it on my summer bucket list!
Hi Jennifer, I’m glad it brought back some good memories. I was never a camper, but that is changing now having my own kids. Good luck with your summer bucket list!
