Geography, like history, is either met with groans or excitement. Some see geography as, dare I say it, boring. It really doesn’t have to be. My family is having fun learning geography with Let’s Go Geography Year 2 by Let’s Go Geography. This weekly homeschool geography curriculum has made geography go from dull to a lot of fun.

What Is Let’s Go Geography, Year 2

As part of the Homeschool Review Crew, I was given access to Let’s Go Geography, Year 2. It is a homeschool geography curriculum for kindergarten through fifth grade. One nice thing about this program is you can use it with multiple ages at the same time. What homeschool family doesn’t appreciate this?!

Now from the title you have probably guessed there are multiple years. You are correct. Let’s Go Geography is a three year homeschool geography program. For this review, I had access to Year 2. The material is broken up into two semesters. Each semester containing sixteen lessons. That’s a total of 32 WEEKS of material.

When purchasing, you can buy a lifetime subscription or get access to the material for two years. It gives your family some flexibility in what will work best for you. This is a digital curriculum so you can access it from any computer.

Included with each lesson are all the materials you will need to teach it. There are links to videos and online sites. Other materials needed can be printed out from the Printables section at the end of the lesson.

If you have older kids, I would definitely get an atlas or find additional information online. The program gives some great recommendations. They also give you the the call numbers you need to look up books at your local library.

I started off using materials from the library but ended up buying the recommended atlases. I plan on continuing to use this program with my son. He is a fifth grader, so he really needs to use additional material to meet his academic needs. Plus, if your teaching geography, it makes sense to have a geography atlas.

Topics Covered in This Homeschool Geography Curriculum

So, what do kids learn in Year 2 of Let’s Go Geography?

Year 2 focuses on Continents. Kids start by learning the continents and an get overview of them. The focus in the first semester is on North America, South America and Europe. The Second semester covers Africa, Asia, and Australia. Antarctica is covered in Year 3.

After an overview, kids learn about different countries on each continent. They don’t cover ALL the countries, but they will learn about the others in Years 1 and 3.

Using Let’s Go Geography, Year 2

Since Let’s Go Geography is a K-5 homeschool curriculum, I used it only with my son since my daughter is in 7th grade. My son, however, is in fifth grade and enjoys geography. He is into maps and all things GIS. I was a little worried how he’d like the program. I didn’t need to worry, though.

How did we use the curriculum?

We worked on one lesson a week. The lessons follow the same formula:

  • Map
  • Flag
  • Music
  • Explore
  • Color or craft

Map

For the first lesson, my son made a Travel Journal with dividers for each of the continents. This is where all the future maps, projects, and writing will be stored.

His first maps were coloring the continents for his binder. After that, he colored maps of the country, region and states he was working on. You can print them from a link online or from the materials for that lesson.

The maps are very helpful. Often, you ask a series of questions and the kids use the map to answer them. The answer is usually pretty clear. However, it is a great way to share information in a fun and memorable way.

For example, when covering the United States as part of North America, my son did a map of the Pacific Northwest states. One question was “What state has Giant Sequoias and Redwoods, the two tallest trees in the world?” Well, the map has pictures of big trees in California.

Notice how the curriculum sneaks in the information. They may have not known the answer, but the map helped them learn it.

Flag

When it comes to the flag part of the lesson, kids are asked to cut and color the country’s flag. Kids place it with the other country flags for that continent.

Music

In the music section, kids watch a a YouTube video that plays music for that region or country. My son listened to the United States’s National Anthem and music for the different regions we studied. It was fun to listen to especially “How Many Biscuits Can You Eat” for the South Atlantic states.

Explore

With the Explore section, you really get into the information about the area you are studying. Here is where you view Photo Albums which has important landmarks, cities, etc. with short captions to teach about the area. You also learn important facts by watching “Sightseeing” videos.

My son and I enjoyed the sightseeing videos. For the Pacific Northwest, we watched videos on Mount Saint Helens while in the Mountain West, we watched videos on the Grand Canyon. The videos are short but give a lot of good information for kids.

The last part of the Explore section is further research and writing. I’d say this is suitable for grades 3-5. Using our library books and atlas, my son learned more about each area. After, he wrote what he learned and stuck it in his notebook. There is a Notebooking page provided if kids want to write their information on it.

Color or Craft

For the final day of the lesson, kids can do a coloring page or a craft. My son did not want to do the coloring pages. They really are better suited for younger kids.

The crafts are nice activities for older kids, though. They are clearly explained with detailed step-by-step directions. They also provide templates for the kids to use when needed so the project isn’t overly difficult.

I love the detail and variety for each craft project. My son enjoyed making the desert scene for the Mountain West region. He used tissue paper to make the pretty colors.

Thoughts on Let’s Go Geography, Year 2

At first I was skeptical if Let’s Go Geography would be a good fit for my fifth grader especially since he is really into geography. It was, though. He enjoyed the maps and videos. He learned a lot about the areas we covered and through his writing assignments.

I know it is a good program, not only because my son learned a lot of information, but also because he wants to continue using it. I wish I found it earlier because I could have easily used it with both my kids at the same time.

Why I Like this Homeschool Geography Curriculum

I ended up enjoying this program for many reasons.

  1. The program contains just enough information for the elementary grades. Kids aren’t overloaded with a lot of information they will never remember.
  2. You really can use this program with multiple ages. The videos are appropriate for all ages, and you can make the program easier or harder with ease.
  3. Parents can adjust the pace of the program to meet their needs. You can spend a few minutes each day to get through the lesson by the end of the week, or you can have longer learning sessions over a couple of days. We generally did half a lesson one day, then did all but the craft the next. The third day we did the craft project.
  4. It makes learning geography fun. I like the mix of mapping, reading, videos, and music. It adds variety to the lesson so it isn’t boring. All kids will find something they will like about this curriculum.

I shared some of the same reasons for why I liked the curriculum. The flexibility of it is awesome. We were able to jump ahead to some other countries (Egypt & Ethiopia) and work on it out of order. I love your son’s desert sunset.

    1. Sharon

Thank you. My son really enjoyed the desert sunset. He’s hit or miss, at his age, with crafts. I love the flexibility of the curriculum, too. We are excited to continue and get into more countries.

I love geography, and was sorry both my kids were out of the age range for this review – it looks like such fun!

I was disappointed my daughter was too old because it is a fun program. My son was able to enjoy it, though. It is simple but thorough.
