Spread the love

My kids are avid readers, so I decided to enlist their help. I asked them to share some of their favorite books. With my kids, it ended up being their favorite book series. They love to get wrapped up in a series as do I.

Here is a list of books my kids love. The books are for tweens, kids 9-12 years old. They vary from adventure to fantasy.

Take a look and see if your kids may enjoy some of these recommendations.

Eragon

My son just started this series and can’t put it down. The author of this book was a 15-year-old boy. It is quite amazing to see a teen wrote this long and detailed story. It serves as an inspiration for other young writers.

The main character of the story is Eragon, a poor farmer boy. One day he finds a stone that turns out to be a dragon’s egg. The egg hatches and the adventure begins. Eragon soon discovers his destiny as a dragon rider. From there, his life is filled with danger and adventure.

Wings of Fire

Wings of Fire is another dragon series. In this series, however, the main characters are the dragons. Like with Eragon, they also discover unknown information about their destiny in life. They have to come to terms with it and figure out how to help with the war raging on in their world.

Inkheart

Inkheart is the first book of the series. In this story, the evil characters of the book, Inkheart, are released into the real world. A young girl, Meggie, must find a way to deal with this kind of magic and put things right again.

The series continues as a character released from the pages of Inkheart seeks a way to return to his story. The series concludes in the third book of this trilogy.

House of Secrets

The House of Secrets is a book co-written by Christopher Columbus. Christopher Columbus is better known for his involvement in movies, such as directing some of the Harry Potter movies.

In this trilogy, a family who is down on their luck moves into a new home. Quickly, things get worse. They are attacked by a witch, and the children are sucked into another world. The kids are transported into this new world house and all. They fear their parents are dead, and the siblings need to work together to save their family and return home.

The book contains lots of adventure and peril. The children deal with danger around every corner and face tough decisions as the series unfolds.

The Blackthorn Key

The Blackthorn Key is set in the 1600s. The main character, Christopher, is an apothecary’s apprentice. Soon he is faced with using his skills, to help solve a mystery in which a cult is killing nearby apothecaries.

The Blackthorn Key is a book filled with mystery and action and adventure. Kids won’t want to put it down.

Redwall

Redwall is an older series. It contains over twenty books.

The first book in the series is about mice that live in Redwall Abbey. They are trying to protect themselves from an army of rats. They must find a legendary sword to survive.

All of the books are filled with animals and adventure. If your child likes stories with animals as the main characters, they will enjoy this series.

As you glance through this list, you will notice there are no pony, princess, or BFF books. My daughter doesn’t tend to enjoy “girl” books. She likes adventure, mystery, fantasy, and spy novels.

So take a look, and maybe you can find some books your kids haven’t heard of before.

The Mysterious Benedict Society

The Mysterious Benedict Society is about a bunch of gifted kids that are put through a series of tests to see who will be able to take part in a secret mission.

It is an unusual book that is imaginative and creative. The characters are quirky and intelligent. It is a very well-written series.

The Last Kids on Earth

If your kid hates reading, this might get them hooked. The book is about a town that is taken over by zombies and monsters. A 13-year-old boy and his friends have to find a way to survive and fight the worst monster of them all.

The book will appeal to boys with all the adventure, strange weapons, and zombies. My daughter, however, loves this series and devoured it in no time.

My Big Fat Zombie Goldfish

Here is another strange but fun series for kids. It says it is for younger kids like 2nd and 3rd grade, but older kids will enjoy it, too.

In My Big Fat Zombie Goldfish, a boy decides to act like a scientist and ends up killing his goldfish. He brings the goldfish back to life, and this is when the trouble begins.

Like The Last Kids on Earth series, this is a quirky book with a zombie. Kids will love the humor and enjoy reading about a zombie goldfish. They will be anxious to get the next book in the series.

The Strange Case of Origami Yoda

The first book of this series, The Strange Case of Origami Yoda, is about a 6th-grade boy named Dwight. Dwight is a strange kid who creates an origami Yoda which appears to be able to predict future events. The middle-schoolers are anxious to see if it is true to save themselves from embarrassing or tough situations.

The books deal with issues that middle schoolers face at this age. The stories weave Origami Yoda and other Star Wars characters into the stories.

Each book contains origami instructions for various Star Wars characters. Kids will have fun creating them.

NERDS

NERDS stands for National Espionage, Rescue, and Defense Society. This book series is about elementary school kids who are super spies. Their job is to take down master criminals.

The books show how nerdy kids can come out on top. It is funny and entertaining.

Masterminds

The story is set in the too-perfect town of Serenity. Some of the kids living there start to realize something is going on. Once they begin investigating, they soon find a connection between themselves and a group of criminal masterminds.

Masterminds is a well-written series filled with twists and turns.

I can’t tell you how many times my kids borrowed these books from the library. Now, they own many of them for themselves. They have read these series multiple times, and that wasn’t enough. They love to listen to the audiobooks as well.
