My favorite thing about fall is the beautiful colors (I’m a huge orange and red fan), apple picking, and pumpkins. I always loved this time of year with my little kiddos because there are so many fun fall-themed things to do. So, I decided to develop a mini fall worksheets packet to help PreK to first graders practice their fine motor skills.
Fall Worksheets to Make Fine Motor Skills Practice Fun
The first few things that come to mind for me when someone says fall are colorful leaves, apples, pumpkins, and scarecrows. So, for this fall worksheet packet, I included these themes.
Each of these worksheets helps young kids work on fine motor skills differently. Continue reading to learn more about each of the skills.
Cutting Skills
Cutting can be tricky for little uncoordinated hands and scary for parents. So when I was a new mom, one of my colleagues, an Occupational Therapist, told me that before putting a crayon in my toddler’s hand, I should start with cutting.
What? Really?
She advised me to get a pair of child safety scissors and junk mail and let her cut.
Now, I’m no expert. I’m not sure if cutting should come before coloring. The point is my OT friend felt it was important and a skill to teach young kids.
So, when I created this fall worksheets packet, I decided to add a couple of cutting sheets. Print them off over and over again, if you want, to get in some cutting practice.
Tracing Worksheets
Tracing is another great fine motor skill to practice. Kids learn to form letters, numbers, shapes, etc., by tracing. By tracing basic line shapes, kiddos are learning the parts of these larger units, which leads to writing their name, words, numbers, and geometric shapes.
Therefore, you will find some apple and pumpkin fall worksheets that practice tracing various lines.
Coloring Fall Worksheets
Another great way to build fine motor skills is coloring. So, I’ve included a couple of sheets for kiddos to color. Coloring teaches kids to start using the small muscles in their hands and fingers.
Have you noticed that when little ones begin coloring, they tend to use big sweeping motions across the paper?
At this stage, toddlers use the larger muscles in their arms (called gross motor skills) to color. As they get older, they learn to use the smaller muscles to color more effectively.
So, inside you this fall packet, you will find two coloring pages.
I hope you and your family enjoy the crisp fall weather and all the fun fall activities that come with it. Use these fall worksheets as a fun way to celebrate the season and sneak in a little fine motor practice while you’re at it. 😉
